SeaWorld's Ocean Explorer

SeaWorld California is to open a new marine adventure attraction next year which it says will ‘create a realm for ocean discovery’.

Named Ocean Explorer, it will feature multiple aquariums, rides and digital technology to inspire guests to protect the oceans.

Construction is now underway on the ride which will take guests on ‘an expedition across the seven seas’ where they will take on a role similar to that of a marine biologist on a global mission of scientific exploration’.

They will travel to Ocean Explorer’s undersea animals aboard submarines, the signature ride of the attraction.

Embarking on these mini-subs, visitors will become researchers on a mission to collect data and learn how they can help animals.

The three-minute experience will include an onboard digital navigation dashboard as well as a few other surprises along the journey, enhancing the riders’ understanding of the ocean ecosystem.

The heart and destination of Ocean Explorer will be a series of undersea research bases housing specially-designed aquariums and interactive activities displaying unique and elusive ocean animals.

Visitors will come eye-to-eye with animals like giant octopuses, huge spider crabs and dozens of moray eels.

Ocean Explorer will also feature a wave swinger ride where guests will fly through thousands of real bubbles in chairs suspended from the tentacles of a giant jelly.

Three additional family-friendly rides will round out the fun of the family-focused attraction.

Construction on Ocean Explorer is underway on a three-acre site where the Animal Connections exhibit and the Circle of Flags are currently located on the southeast side of the park.

This attraction is scheduled to open in late spring of 2017.

Boot Hill true to Old West

Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas, is one of the top visitor attractions in the country for experiencing the ‘Old West’.

Boot Hill

The museum was recognised by U.S. magazine 'True West' which annually ranks those institutions that most effectively “Keep the Old West alive throughout the nation and beyond”.

The publication included Boot Hill Museum in its line-up of Top 10 Western Museums for 2016 in recognition of its 'superior exhibitions and ability to reach all generations through creativity in interpreting the West while fulfilling the institution’s mission'.

In its summing up of the facility True West wrote: “Boot Hill and Dodge City keep the Old West vibrant and relevant for 21st century audiences!”

Boot Hill Museum tells the story of early Dodge City along Front Street. The area’s history dates back to the Native Americans who thrived off the land and the buffalo, while the establishment of the Santa Fe Trail brought settlers to the area.

The arrival of the U.S. Army prompted the building of Fort Dodge and soon to follow was the establishment of a rough and rowdy cattle town known as Dodge City.

The museum is located on the original site of Boot Hill Cemetery and highlights the glory days of town through a range of interactive displays and activities: see gunfight reenactments, enjoy the saloon-style Branch Variety Show, belly up to the bar for a cold sarsaparilla, enjoy some of grandma’s homemade fudge in the General Store or take home an Old West souvenir from the Boot Hill gift shop.

There is also a Cowboy Hall of Fame honoring legendary Kansas cowboys.

Tasty deals in Key West

Key West, Florida, is to hold its first-ever restaurant month from September 16 to October 16.

Key West

WineDine KeyWest will see visitors – culinary connoisseurs and those in search of a quick snack alike – enjoying multi-course fixed price meals at 30 restaurants on the sub-tropical island.

Among those restaurants offering three-course meals priced at approximately $20 per person (around £15) for lunch and $35 per person (around £27) for dinner will be the Conch Republic Seafood Company, Southernmost Beach Café and Spencer’s by the Sea.

The culinary celebration was ‘cooked up’ by the team behind the popular annual Key West Food & Wine Festival to promote fine dining and showcase the island's flavours.

"Key West has some world-class restaurants," said event co-creator Mark Certonio. "Our mission is to position the island as a dining destination and foodie paradise, and put a spotlight on all that it has to offer."

The restaurants range from casual waterfront spots and trendy bistros to eateries specialising in fresh Florida Keys seafood and award-winning gourmet emporiums.
